222,000 Adult Bed Assistance Rails Recalled After Death

More than 200,000 assistance rails for adult beds have been recalled this week following one death caused by the product.
Medical King is recalling three models of its portable bed rails due to risks of users becoming trapped within the rail or between the rail and mattress, according to a recall notice issued Thursday by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
“This poses a serious entrapment hazard and risk of death by asphyxiation,” the CPSC said.
The announcement said that “about 220,000 units” were included in the recall.
The recall involves the Bed Assist Rail with Adjustable Heights (model numbers 7007 and 7057) and the Bed Assist Rail Without Legs (model number 7037).
The Bed Assist Rail with Adjustable Heights is made of black or white metal tubing with a rounded black foam rubber grip handle and a fabric pouch.
The Bed Assist Rail Without Legs is made of silver metal tubing with a black foam rubber grip handle and a black fabric pouch. The recall announcement said there are no model numbers or brand-specific labels on the recalled bed rails.
According to the recall announcement, Medical King sold the specific products from January 2020 through March 2024. The products had a list price of roughly $40 and were sold at numerous online retailers including “Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Target Plus, eBay, Kohls.com and medicalkingusa.com.”
The recalled products were manufactured in China, the CPSC said.
The medical equipment supplier has reported one death linked to the recalled bed rails. According to the announcement, a 66-year-old man who died in November 2023 after becoming trapped between his mattress and a bed rail at a residential care facility in South Carolina.
The recall announcement did not include any further information about additional injuries or incidents related to the specific product.
Consumers who have the recalled bed rails should stop using them immediately and contact Medical King for a free repair kit or replacement, depending on the model, the notice advised.
Medical King advises consumers to verify if their bed rail is affected by checking their purchase receipts or history. Additional details are available on the company’s recall webpage.
In a separate advisory, the CPSC highlighted that Thursday’s Medical King recall is the ninth recall of adult portable bed rails it has issued since 2021, involving several different manufacturers and suppliers.
